Why Your Health Insurance Premiums Went Up

Are you on an individual or small business health insurance plan, and found that your rates went up this year?

The reason isn't widely-known, and it's interesting: The recession's so bad that healthy people are choosing to forego health insurance, leaving a higher proportion of higher-cost, sicker people on the rolls, driving up premiums for all.

  1. That's an interesting assertion.

Most of the coverage I've seen - and what our insurance broker told us recently - was that the combination of underlying medical costs rising, plus the Federal rules requiring insurers to cover new services, were driving premium rate increases.

The good news is that the premium increases are the lowest they've been in a while, so at least we have that going for us.

  2. Wish I could remember the source. I heard it on radio from a knowledgable-sounding expert with great credentials. It made intuitive sense to me, so I've passed it on.
