i was in oaxaca with the wife in 1995 - we'd come to gawk at monte alban and stayed at an impossibly lovely ex-convent a few hundred yards from the city's central square.
sadly, we knew exactly nothing about oaxacan cuisine, but i remember thoroughly enjoying sampling the fare in all the (admittedly touristy) restaurants on the main square.
these photos inspire a burning desire to go back and check out the scene behind the square.
