Bush Doctrine Better for Goose than for Gander

We've had the expected ratcheting up of tensions between Pakistan and India, now that it's clear Pakistan-based terrorists were responsible for the Mumbai attacks. Hey, the Bush Doctrine settled this, didn't it? A nation has the right to aggression against states harboring terrorists threatening that nation (clunky syntax, I know, but much web surfing found no smoother versions).

Like its use of torture, the Bush Doctrine was an unthinkably reckless meme to circulate into the world. It will only lead to massive destabilization - the sort of climate provocateurs are aiming to create. Why shouldn't India do to Pakistan what we did to Afghanistan and Iraq?
"I've been in the Bible every day since I've been the President" -- George Bush
Yep, he's been in it, all right!
Before: "That ye resist not evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."
After: "Smite down with all your might whosever so much as associates with anyone who might ever smite thee on thy right cheek."

All said, I do hope Pakistan rounds up those monsters immediately (especially Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, whom the Pakistanis once had under house arrest but subsequently released, and who, as late as 2006, was
said by Pakistan's foreign office to "not [be] involved in any subversive and terrorist activities."), and that it doesn't devolve into civil war as a result.

Pakistan might not acquiesce to India's demand for all the 20 terrorists to be extradited...but they should at least handover the Indian nationals like Dawood Ibrahim who's hiding there (I guess he's just got enough cues to go underground again).
The Indo-Pak bickering has started already on this issue, and hence Condi is here to pat the backs and mediate.
I really hope (an Indo-Pak partnership has never worked out before, but these are crazy times!) all these differences are ironed out fast and the perpetrators are prosecuted. That would pump some confidence into Indians on our government.

Sorry to be dour, but things are definitely not headed the right way. When I wrote this:
http://jimleff.blogspot.com/2008/11/historical-turning-point-re-terrorism.html, there was a rare opportunity for things to move 180 degrees in the unexpected direction, and have this be a moment of historic cooperation between the two countries (and launch a new model where the horrors of terrorism actually bring antagonists CLOSER...which would kick the legs out from under the terrorism as a strategy).

But it's all been nothing but playground sandbox politics. The kids who WANT to fight make little comments, little aggressive movements, stirring and coaxing and poking and wheedling the situation toward combustion. The more time goes by, the more errant statements and micro-actions (and inactions) will be seized upon by hawks on both sides until both have a critical mass of outrage they can use to justify whatever their tribal, nationalistic spleens wanted to see happen in the first place.

I'm not proud of my species.
