The US revived the notion of "jihad" in the Muslim world - to energize the Mujahideen against the Russians.

The US supported the rise of Saddam Hussein - to serve as a bulwark against communism.

And, most recently, the right wing power players fanned the flames of the tea party movement - to energize the base. Once again: woops!
