Whole Foods is presently selling tangerines with stems and leaves attached, and they're by far the best I've ever tasted. Worth a special trip to pick some up.

Nice that they've figured out a way to fly(?) the same standardized tangerines to all their stores so that you can make a post like this without geographic reference. Locavores be darned. Perfectly identical fresh food sold at nationwide chains is the way to go.
I buy local when I can. But the tangerines grown in this part of New England are pretty lousy.
The phrase "perfectly identical" makes this sound sterile and Soylent Greenish. Totally uncalled for. These are delicious, wonderful fruits grown on real live trees somewhere. I fully understand the benefits of locavorism, the environmental downside to all the shipping, etc.. So, with all things being equal, I, again, do strive to buy local. But deliciousness counts, too, and I'm thrilled to have access to these tangerines. It's a blessing, not a blight.
Locavorism is a great concept to throw into the mix of how we make consumer decisions about food. It deserves to be out there, and have some sway. But when it starts getting religious, and geared-up true believers are unable to tolerate shades of grey, I think it's gone too far.
